What Is Adaptive Radiation?
What is adaptive radiation?
Adaptive radiation is the evolutionary mechanism wherein the animals adapt a certain part for different niches and habitats that they live in. One of the most famous adaptive radiation examples is the forearm of various mammals. Take a look at the list below:
Body part: Forearm/forelim
- Porpoise - front flippers/fins (for swimming)
- Mole rat - digging claws (for burrowing)
- Humans - separate fingers with opposable thumb (for creating and using tools)
Adaptive radiation is extremely useful in the study of evolutionary biology, which is why scientists tend to pay much attention about how different animals use their body parts for their certain adaptations and niches.
